Is YouTube Premium Worth It in 2026? Prices, Lite and Family

YouTube Premium is worth it if you watch a lot of YouTube on your phone and would pay for a music app anyway: at $15.99/month in the US, it removes ads, keeps videos playing in the background and includes YouTube Music Premium, which costs $11.99 by itself. If you only want fewer ads on regular videos, Premium Lite is $8.99. And if you signed up on an iPhone, you're likely paying $5 a month more than you need to.

Two things stand out. Lite and Student cost the same, so a college student gets full Premium for the price of Lite. And the annual plan works out to $13.33 a month, the lowest Individual price.

#What Premium includes and what Lite leaves out

Full Premium removes ads across YouTube, lets you download videos for offline viewing, keeps playback going in the background and includes YouTube Music Premium.

Lite got better in 2026. In February, YouTube announced background play and downloads for Premium Lite everywhere the plan is offered. The catch is that everything applies to most videos that aren't music:

#YouTube Premium or YouTube Music Premium?

If music is your main reason to pay, compare the two directly (US prices):

YouTube Music Premium gives you ad-free music, background play and downloads in the YouTube Music app, but regular YouTube videos still have ads. For $4 a month more, Premium removes them everywhere. If you watch YouTube for even a few hours a week, that upgrade is the better deal.

#Is YouTube Premium Family worth it?

Family costs $26.99 and covers the manager plus up to 5 people at the same residential address. According to YouTube Help on family plans, the manager must be 18 or older, and nobody in the group can have switched family groups in the last 12 months.

The math per person:

• 6 people: $4.50 each.
• 3 people: $9.00 each.
• 2 people: $13.50 each, versus $15.99 for an Individual plan.

#Does YouTube Premium cost more through the App Store?

Yes, noticeably. If you subscribe inside the YouTube app on an iPhone or iPad, Apple bills you:

Check your card statement: a charge from Apple (something like "APPLE.COM/BILL") means App Store billing. To switch, cancel the subscription in your iPhone's Settings, in your Apple account's subscriptions list, let the paid period run out, then subscribe again on YouTube's website in a browser. You won't lose access or pay twice.

#Is the YouTube Premium annual plan worth it?

At $159.99, the annual plan is $31.89 cheaper than 12 months of Individual ($191.88), about 17% off. The rules are strict, though, according to YouTube's annual plan help page:

• it's for individual users only, with no Family version;
• it's prepaid and non-recurring: access ends after the 12 months;
• it's non-refundable and can't be paused;
• you can't be a current YouTube Premium or Music Premium subscriber when you sign up.

#When YouTube Premium is worth it (and when it isn't)

It's worth it if:

• you watch YouTube every day, mostly on your phone, and ads get in the way;
• you'd listen to music on YouTube Music anyway: for $4 more than Music alone, you get all of YouTube ad-free;
• you're thinking of replacing Spotify ($12.99) with one service, since Premium costs $3 more and covers both video and music (see the music streaming comparison);
• two or more people in your home would use Family.

Lite is enough if you want ad-free videos and don't use YouTube for music.

It isn't worth it if you watch occasionally, mostly on a computer, or already pay for another music app you don't plan to drop.
