An annual plan pays off when you'll keep the service for at least 10 months: many US subscriptions charge the same as 10 monthly payments for a full year, which works out to about 16.6% off. Some, like PlayStation Plus and Apple Arcade, cut 33–40%, so the yearly plan breaks even around month 7 or 8. Below are the numbers with real US prices, a simple rule to decide, and the risks of paying 12 months upfront.
How much do you save with an annual plan?
The table compares 12 monthly payments with the yearly plan at the same tier. The last column is the break-even point: how many months of monthly billing cost as much as the annual plan.
| Service and plan | Monthly | 12 × monthly | Yearly | You save | Breaks even at |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon Prime | $14.99 | $179.88 | $139.00 | $40.88 (22.7%) | 9.3 months |
| HBO Max Basic with Ads | $10.99 | $131.88 | $109.99 | $21.89 (16.6%) | 10 months |
| HBO Max Standard | $18.49 | $221.88 | $184.99 | $36.89 (16.6%) | 10 months |
| HBO Max Premium | $22.99 | $275.88 | $229.99 | $45.89 (16.6%) | 10 months |
| Peacock Premium | $12.99 | $155.88 | $129.99 | $25.89 (16.6%) | 10 months |
| Peacock Premium Plus | $19.99 | $239.88 | $199.99 | $39.89 (16.6%) | 10 months |
| YouTube Premium Individual | $15.99 | $191.88 | $159.99 | $31.89 (16.6%) | 10 months |
| Microsoft 365 Personal | $9.99 | $119.88 | $99.99 | $19.89 (16.6%) | 10 months |
| Microsoft 365 Family | $12.99 | $155.88 | $129.99 | $25.89 (16.6%) | 10 months |
| PlayStation Plus Essential | $10.99 | $131.88 | $79.99 | $51.89 (39.3%) | 7.3 months |
| PlayStation Plus Extra | $16.99 | $203.88 | $134.99 | $68.89 (33.8%) | 7.9 months |
| PlayStation Plus Premium | $19.99 | $239.88 | $159.99 | $79.89 (33.3%) | 8 months |
| Canva Pro | $18.00 | $216.00 | $144.00 | $72.00 (33.3%) | 8 months |
| Apple Arcade | $6.99 | $83.88 | $49.99 | $33.89 (40.4%) | 7.2 months |
| Oura membership | $5.99 | $71.88 | $69.99 | $1.89 (2.6%) | 11.7 months |
US prices checked in October 2026.
Two patterns stand out. HBO Max, Peacock, YouTube Premium and Microsoft 365 all follow "pay for 10, get 12." PlayStation Plus, Apple Arcade and Canva Pro discount much more deeply, with Amazon Prime in between at 22.7%. And there's the outlier: Oura's yearly membership saves less than $2 over a full year, which is hardly worth locking up $70.
When does an annual plan break even?
The math is a single division: yearly price ÷ monthly price = months to break even. If you'd keep the service longer than that, the annual plan is cheaper.
- Amazon Prime: $139 ÷ $14.99 ≈ 9.3. Nine months on monthly cost $134.91; ten cost $149.90. So if you'd stay 10 months or more, go annual.
- PlayStation Plus Essential: $79.99 ÷ $10.99 ≈ 7.3. From month 8 on, the yearly plan wins.
- HBO Max Standard: $184.99 ÷ $18.49 ≈ 10. Ten months is a tie; you only come out ahead from month 11.
A practical rule: look back at the last 12 months. If you used the service in at least 10 of them, the annual plan is almost always the better deal. If you drift in and out, stay monthly.
When is monthly the smarter choice?
Monthly costs more per month, but it buys flexibility. It usually wins when:
- You watch or play in seasons. Subscribed for one show, a sports season or a game? Pay only for the months you use. Streaming rotation takes this to the extreme, and it only works with monthly plans.
- You're still testing. Try a month or two before committing to twelve.
- The discount is tiny. At 2.6% off, as with Oura, prepaying a year makes little sense.
- Cash flow matters this month. A yearly plan lands all at once: $159.99 for PS Plus Premium versus $19.99 on monthly.

Do annual subscriptions renew automatically?
Many do. Microsoft 365, for example, bills a recurring charge, so on the renewal date the full yearly price goes on your card. That's the classic trap: a $129.99 charge for Microsoft 365 Family that you forgot was coming.
There are exceptions. According to YouTube Help, Premium annual plans are prepaid, non-recurring memberships; when one expires, you need to buy another plan to keep your benefits. No surprise charge, but also no automatic continuation.
Can you get a refund if you cancel an annual plan?
Each company sets its own rules, and they differ a lot:
- Amazon Prime: Amazon's help page on canceling Prime says paid members who haven't used their benefits are eligible for a full refund of the current membership period.
- Microsoft 365: the Microsoft subscription refund policy allows a refund within 30 days of the initial purchase, and a refund of the most recent recurring charge if you cancel within 30 days after paying. That second right is limited to once per Microsoft account, per subscription product.
- YouTube Premium: the same YouTube Help page says annual plans are not refundable and can't be paused.
There's no general federal rule that forces a prorated refund on a yearly plan, so read the terms on screen before you pay. If you subscribed through the App Store or Google Play, refund requests go to the store.
How do you switch from monthly to annual?
A few checks keep you from paying twice:
- Time it to your billing date. Switch shortly before the next monthly charge, and read whether the change applies right away or at the next renewal.
- Check the service's own rules. YouTube Help says you can't buy an annual plan while you're a current Premium or Music Premium subscriber, and annual plans are only for individual users. So cancel the monthly membership first; you may have to wait until it runs out.
- Compare where you pay. Plans and prices in the App Store or Google Play can differ from the website. YouTube Premium Individual, for example, costs $20.99/mo through the App Store versus $15.99/mo directly.
- Write down the renewal date the day you pay.
Can the price of an annual plan go up?
Yes. The year you've already paid for stays the same, but the renewal is usually billed at the current price. Two examples from our price history:
- Microsoft 365 Personal yearly went from $69.99 to $99.99 on January 16, 2025; Family went from $99.99 to $129.99 the same day (Microsoft 365 price history).
- Peacock Premium has risen every year since 2023, from $4.99 at launch in 2020 to $12.99 since August 2026 (Peacock price history).
That cuts both ways. Annual billing pushes an increase to your next renewal date, which helps on services that raise prices often. Amazon Prime, by contrast, has stayed at $139 a year since February 2022. To see which services raise prices most, check the subscription price index.
How Subfaro helps

The biggest risk of an annual plan is forgetting it until it renews. Subfaro alerts you before each charge, including yearly renewals, and shows a calendar of upcoming charges. Prices of more than 100 services are checked every week, so you also get an alert when your plan's price changes, in time to decide whether to renew.
The free plan tracks up to 10 subscriptions with no time limit. Create your free account and add your annual plans with their renewal dates.
FAQ
Is an annual subscription always cheaper than monthly?
Almost always, but by very different amounts. Many US plans charge 10 months for 12 (about 16.6% off), PlayStation Plus Essential saves 39.3%, and Oura's yearly membership saves just $1.89 a year.
How do I know if an annual plan is worth it?
Divide the yearly price by the monthly price. For Amazon Prime, $139 ÷ $14.99 is about 9.3, so if you'd keep Prime for 10 months or more, the annual plan costs less.
Can I get a refund if I cancel an annual plan early?
It depends on the company. Amazon says paid Prime members who haven't used their benefits can get a full refund of the current period, Microsoft allows refunds within 30 days of the initial purchase, and YouTube says its annual Premium plans aren't refundable.
Do annual subscriptions renew automatically?
Many do. Microsoft 365, for example, bills a recurring charge, so the full yearly price hits your card on the renewal date. YouTube Premium's annual plans are an exception: they're prepaid, don't recur, and you buy a new plan when one expires.
