What were the biggest price increases of 2026?

By percentage, the top of the list looks like this:

  1. Crunchyroll Fan: +25%, from $7.99 to $9.99.
  2. Peacock Premium: +18.2%, from $10.99 to $12.99.
  3. Apple Music Family: +17.7%, from $16.99 to $19.99.
  4. Peacock Premium Plus: +17.7%, from $16.99 to $19.99.
  5. YouTube Premium Family: +17.4%, from $22.99 to $26.99.

In dollars, the biggest single jump was YouTube Premium Family: $4 more a month, or $48 a year. Notice the pattern too: student and family plans were hit hard. Spotify Student, Apple Music Student and Apple Music Family all rose more than 16%, so a "discount" plan isn't a shield against hikes.

How much do 2026's increases add up to?

A $2 increase sounds small, but they stack. Take someone with five popular services that all went up this year:

SubscriptionBeforeAfter
Netflix Standard$17.99$19.99
Spotify Premium Individual$11.99$12.99
YouTube Premium Individual$13.99$15.99
Disney+ Premium$18.99$21.49
Peacock Premium$10.99$12.99
Total per month$73.95$83.45

That's $9.50 more a month, or $114 a year, a 12.8% increase without watching or listening to anything new. For the bigger picture, the Subfaro subscription price index tracks a basket of popular services month by month and compares it with official inflation.

Did any subscription get cheaper in 2026?

One did. On April 21, 2026, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate dropped from $29.99 to $22.99 a month, a 23% cut. That came after a 50% jump in October 2025, from $19.99. Even after the cut, Ultimate costs $3 more than it did before the restructuring. See the Game Pass price history.

Do existing subscribers pay the new price right away?

Usually not. The new price applies first to people who sign up from that date. Existing subscribers typically get an email or in-app notice, and the higher price starts on a later bill.

What the rules say depends on where you live:

  • No federal click-to-cancel rule. The FTC finalized one in 2024, but the Eighth Circuit vacated it in July 2025. In March 2026 the FTC asked for public comment on a possible new rule, the first step of a long process.
  • California requires notice. Under AB 2863, for contracts entered into, amended or extended on or after July 1, 2025, a business that changes the fee must give clear notice, plus how to cancel, 7 to 30 days before the change takes effect.
  • Company terms matter too. Microsoft's Game Pass page, for example, says charges may increase with at least 30 days' notice.

If you were charged a higher price you never agreed to, or charged after canceling, our guide to disputing a subscription charge walks through the steps.

What to do when your subscription goes up

A price hike is a good moment to ask whether the plan still earns its spot. A few moves, with today's US prices:

  1. Switch to the ad tier. Netflix Standard with ads is $8.99 versus $19.99 for Standard, saving $11 a month.
  2. Step down from Premium. Netflix Premium to Standard saves $7 a month; Peacock Premium Plus to Premium saves $7 too.
  3. Prepay a year where it's cheaper. Peacock Premium yearly is $129.99, versus $155.88 for 12 monthly payments. It still renews at whatever the price is then, but your rate is locked until renewal.
  4. Use the student perk. Spotify Premium Student ($6.99) includes Hulu (With Ads) at no extra cost, per Spotify's support page.
  5. Rotate instead of stacking. Keep one or two streaming services at a time and swap when you finish a show.
  6. Cancel what you don't use. If the hike email made you think "when did I last open this?", that's your answer.

No. The FTC's 2024 click-to-cancel rule was vacated by a federal appeals court in July 2025. In March 2026 the FTC asked for public comment on a possible new rule, but none is in force.
