The fastest way to save money on subscriptions is to cancel what you don't use and move the rest to the cheapest version of the same service: an ad tier, an annual plan, a family plan or a student deal. Switching Netflix Standard to the ad-supported plan alone saves $132 a year. Below are 15 concrete ways, with US prices checked in October 2026.

How much can each tip save?

A quick summary before the details. Savings are per year, for one person, at today's prices:

Cut what you don't use

1. Cancel forgotten subscriptions

This is the surest saving, because a canceled charge disappears for good. US adults waste an average of $21 a month on subscriptions they don't use, according to CNET's 2026 survey. Pull your last two or three card statements and mark every recurring charge. Free trials that turned paid and apps you subscribed to once on your phone are the usual suspects. Here's how to find forgotten subscriptions on your statement.

2. Drop the duplicate

Paying two services for the same job is common. YouTube Premium, for example, includes the YouTube Music app ad-free, offline and in the background. If you pay for YouTube Premium ($15.99) and Spotify Premium ($12.99), dropping Spotify saves $155.88 a year. The same goes for two cloud plans or two AI assistants.

3. Use the free tier when it's enough

Plenty of services have a free version. ChatGPT Free includes unlimited everyday text chats; the paid Go plan is $8 a month. Spotify has a free plan with ads. If you're a light user, try the free tier for a month before paying.

4. Switch to the ad-supported plan

It's the biggest single lever for streaming:

  • Netflix: $8.99 with ads versus $19.99 for Standard ($132 a year).
  • Hulu: $12.49 with ads versus $21.49 with no ads ($108 a year).
  • HBO Max: $10.99 for Basic with Ads versus $18.49 for Standard ($90 a year).

5. Step down a tier

Many people pay for the top plan without using what it adds. Netflix Premium ($26.99) to Standard ($19.99) saves $84 a year. Peacock Premium Plus ($19.99) to Premium ($12.99) saves another $84.

6. Pay for the storage you actually use

Cloud storage only ever seems to grow. Check how much space you really use: iCloud+ 2 TB is $9.99 a month and 200 GB is $2.99. If you fit in the smaller plan, that's $84 a year. Clear old backups and duplicate videos first.

7. Prepay a year for what you use all year

ServiceYearly12 monthly paymentsSavings
Amazon Prime$139.00$179.88$40.88
Disney+ Premium$214.99$257.88$42.89
YouTube Premium Individual$159.99$191.88$31.89
Peacock Premium$129.99$155.88$25.89
PS Plus Essential$79.99$131.88$51.89

An annual plan only pays off if you'll use all 12 months. Our guide to annual vs monthly subscriptions shows how to decide.

8. Join a family plan

Spotify Premium Family is $21.99 for up to 6 accounts: $3.67 each, versus $12.99 for Individual. YouTube Premium Family works out to $4.50 each with six people. Family plans usually require everyone to live at the same address. Each service's rules, and a fair way to split the bill, are in how to split subscriptions with family plans.

9. Couples: use a Duo plan

Two Spotify Premium Individual plans cost $25.98. Spotify Duo, for two accounts, is $18.99: $83.88 less a year for the couple. Deezer also has a Duo plan, at $15.99.

10. Use student pricing while you can

College students pay a lot less: Spotify Premium Student is $6.99, Apple Music Student $6.99 and YouTube Premium Student $8.99. Spotify's student plan also includes Hulu (With Ads) at no extra cost. Verification is through SheerID, and the discount lasts up to four years with a re-check every 12 months.

11. Bundle, but only if you use everything

Apple One Individual costs $21.95 and includes Apple Music, Apple TV, Apple Arcade and 50 GB of iCloud+. Separately, those four cost $34.96, so the bundle saves about $13 a month. It's only a deal if you'd pay for at least three of the four anyway.

Pay the cheapest way

12. Subscribe on the web, not through the App Store

App Store pricing can be higher. YouTube Premium Individual is $15.99 directly and $20.99 through the App Store. Family is $26.99 versus $34.99, or $96 a year. If you signed up on your iPhone, cancel in the App Store and resubscribe on the web when the period ends.

13. Avoid foreign transaction fees

If a service bills you from abroad, some cards add a foreign transaction fee to every charge, even for a few dollars. Keep those subscriptions on a card with no foreign transaction fee, and say no if a checkout offers to "pay in your currency". Our guide to foreign transaction fees on subscriptions covers how to spot them.

14. Rotate your streaming services

Keeping Netflix Standard, Disney+ Premium and HBO Max Standard at the same time costs $59.97 a month, or $719.64 a year. Subscribing to one at a time costs $18.49 to $21.49 a month, and you still watch everything, just in sequence. Here's how to build a streaming rotation.

15. Re-decide every time a price goes up

A price hike is the moment to review the plan. In March 2026, Netflix Standard went from $17.99 to $19.99. Anyone who used that notice to switch to Standard with ads now pays $8.99. See every hike of the year in subscription price increases in 2026.
