Splitting subscriptions through a family or duo plan is one of the easiest ways to pay less for streaming, music and cloud storage: a full Spotify Family plan works out to under $4 per person, versus $12.99 for Premium Individual. The catch is the rules (most plans require everyone to live together) and the awkwardness of collecting money every month. Here are the plans that exist, the math per person, and a simple way to collect.

Which services have family or duo plans

Not every service offers a multi-person plan. These are the main ones in Subfaro's catalog with a family plan, a duo plan or built-in sharing, with prices checked in October 2026:

ServiceIndividualDuoFamilyUp to
Spotify$12.99/mo$18.99/mo$21.99/mo2 (Duo) or 6 (Family)
YouTube Premium$15.99/mo—$26.99/mo6
Apple Music$11.99/mo—$19.99/mo6
Apple One$21.95/mo—$27.95/mo6
Microsoft 365$9.99/mo (Personal)—$12.99/mo (Family)6
Google One (100 GB)$1.99/mo—the same plan is shareable6

A few others have group tiers too: Deezer has Duo ($15.99/mo) and Family ($19.99/mo), and YouTube Music Family costs $18.99/mo. For Microsoft 365, the yearly plan is the better deal: Family yearly is $129.99/yr, versus $99.99/yr for Personal.

What each person pays on a family plan

A family plan only pays off when enough people are on it. Here is the math with a full plan and with four people, compared with going solo:

PlanTotalPer person (full)Per person (4 people)Individual
Spotify Duo$18.99$9.50 (2)—$12.99
Spotify Family$21.99$3.67 (6)$5.50$12.99
YouTube Premium Family$26.99$4.50 (6)$6.75$15.99
Apple One Family$27.95$4.66 (6)$6.99$21.95
Microsoft 365 Family (monthly)$12.99$2.17 (6)$3.25$9.99
Google One 100 GB$1.99$0.33 (6)$0.50$1.99

With four people on Spotify Family, each pays about $5.50 instead of $12.99. That is $7.49 less per month, or $89.88 a year, for every person in the group.

Duo is its own case: for a couple, $9.50 each already beats two individual plans. If there are three or more of you, Family is almost always cheaper per head.

Watch the app store price

Subscribing inside an iPhone app can cost more. In the catalog, YouTube Premium Family via the App Store is $34.99/mo, $8.00 more than the $26.99 you pay when you subscribe on the website. Whoever manages the plan should sign up through the cheaper channel.

The rules: same household, check-ins and the end of password sharing

Services have tightened their rules in recent years. Before you build a group, check what each one requires:

  • Spotify Family and Duo: members must live with the plan manager and enter the same home address when joining (Spotify, Premium Family). Duo is described as a plan for two people who live together (Spotify Duo).
  • YouTube Premium Family: the manager can invite up to 5 people, all living at the same residential address, and nobody can have switched family groups in the last 12 months (YouTube Help).
  • Apple One and Apple Music: Family Sharing covers the organizer plus up to five people (Apple One). Everyone keeps their own Apple Account.
  • Microsoft 365 Family: you can share with up to five other people in your Microsoft family group (Microsoft Support).
  • Google One: the plan can be shared with up to 5 family members who live in the same country, except on the 30 GB Lite plan (Google One Help).

Netflix and the extra member

Netflix has no family plan. An account is meant for one household, meaning the devices connected at your main place of viewing. Anyone who lives elsewhere needs their own account or a paid extra member slot (Netflix Help Center).

Extra members can only be added on Standard (1 slot) and Premium (up to 2 slots), not on the ad-supported plan (Netflix plans and pricing). In the catalog, a slot costs $9.99/mo, or $7.99/mo with ads. In practice:

  • Standard ($19.99) + 1 extra member ($9.99) = $29.98, or $14.99 each if you split it evenly.
  • Premium ($26.99) + 2 extra members ($19.98) = $46.97, or about $15.66 each across three people.

Working around these rules can get access paused. If someone lives far away, an extra member slot or their own plan is the low-stress option.

How to split subscriptions fairly

There is no single formula, but three models cover almost every group:

  1. Equal shares for everyone, including the payer. The simplest and most common. Spotify Family at $21.99 across five people: $4.40 each.
  2. Pay for what you add. Works well for Netflix: the owner would pay for Standard anyway, so the friend covers just the $9.99 extra member slot.
  3. Weighted by use. Useful when one person uses much more, like whoever fills most of the Google One storage. It takes more discussion, so only use it if the group wants to.

A few habits prevent friction:

  • Round up to the nearest dime or dollar so nobody has to make change.
  • Agree up front that when the price goes up, everyone's share goes up too.
  • For yearly plans like Microsoft 365 Family, decide whether people pay their share once ($21.67/yr across six) or monthly.
  • Agree on notice for leaving the group, so the manager isn't left paying alone.

Who should manage the plan

The plan lives on one person's account and card. If that person cancels, swaps cards or misses a payment, everyone loses access at once. So pick a manager who is organized, plans to stay in the group for a while and actually uses the service. It also helps to keep a note of who is on each plan: when someone leaves, the open spot can go to someone else in the household.

How to collect every month without the awkwardness

Peer-to-peer payment apps such as Venmo or Zelle make this easy in the US. To avoid relying on anyone's memory:

  1. Pick a fixed date, a day or two before the charge hits the manager's card.
  2. Share your payment handle once and pin it in the group chat.
  3. Send a payment request on the agreed date, or ask everyone to set up a recurring payment if their app supports it.
  4. Check who paid and nudge only the ones who didn't, lightly.

For bigger groups, collecting the whole year at once saves eleven reminders.

How Subfaro helps

In Subfaro, every subscription has a Shared with field where you list the people you split it with. The app works out your part (total divided by the number of people, you included) and counts only that part in your monthly spending. A Spotify Family plan shared with three people shows up as $5.50, not $21.99.

You also get an alert before each charge, a natural moment to remind the group, and an automatic alert when the plan's price changes, since the catalog is checked every week. The free plan covers up to 10 subscriptions with no time limit. If you still track everything in a sheet, read spreadsheet or app for tracking subscriptions, or create a free account.

FAQ

Can I share Spotify Family with friends who live somewhere else?

Not under Spotify's rules. Premium Family and Duo are for people who live at the same address, and each member enters the plan manager's home address when joining.

How much is a Netflix extra member in the US?

In Subfaro's catalog, checked in October 2026, an extra member costs $9.99/mo, or $7.99/mo with ads. Extra members can only be added to the Standard and Premium plans.

What is the fairest way to split a subscription?

For most groups, splitting the total equally among everyone who uses it, including the person who pays, is the simplest. Round up a few cents to absorb small changes and agree on a fixed payment date.

Does Subfaro charge my friends automatically?

No. Subfaro records who you share each subscription with and shows your part in your total, but it never moves money. You collect through whatever payment app your group prefers.
