To cancel Spotify Premium, sign in to your account page in a web browser, go to "Manage your plan" and select "Cancel subscription." Your Premium stays until your next billing date, then your account switches to Spotify free, with ads, and your playlists stay put. Below: how to do it on a phone, what changes when Google Play or a partner bills you, what Spotify's refund policy says, and how to make sure you aren't charged again.
How to cancel Spotify Premium in a web browser
According to Spotify's official cancellation page, you can cancel any time from your account page:
- Sign in and go to Manage your plan.
- Select "Cancel subscription."
- Keep going until you see the confirmation message.
This works in any browser, on a computer or a phone. Spotify also accepts cancellations through a form you fill out and send to it, linked at the bottom of the same help page, which helps if you can't finish the process on the site.
Have more than one Spotify login (say, one with email and one through Google or Apple)? Make sure you're signed in to the account that actually pays for Premium. It's a more common mistake than it sounds.
How to cancel Spotify on Android or iPhone
On a phone, the path depends on who bills you, not on the device.
Android
- You pay Spotify directly (for example, with a card): open your phone's browser and follow the steps above.
- You pay through Google Play Billing: Spotify says Google manages those payments. On your Android device, go to your subscriptions in Google Play, select Spotify, tap "Cancel subscription" and follow the instructions, as described in Google Play Help. Google also notes that uninstalling the app doesn't cancel the subscription.
Not sure which one applies? Check your card statement: a charge from Google points to Google Play.
iPhone and iPad
Spotify says that, due to Apple restrictions, you can't subscribe to Premium through the iPhone and iPad app; you sign up on the website. So you cancel on the website too, from your account page in Safari or Chrome. If your statement still shows the charge as coming from Apple, check your Apple subscriptions in iPhone Settings, as our guide to canceling subscriptions explains.
Billed by a partner or a gift card: how to cancel
Premium through a phone or internet provider
If your account page has no option to change plans, Spotify says your plan is tied to a partner company, such as your mobile or internet provider. You cancel with that company: in "Manage your plan," check "Payment" for the partner's contact link.
Be careful when switching how you pay. Spotify's plan-change rules say that if you subscribe directly, you need to cancel and wait until your account switches to free before activating Premium through a partner, and the reverse also applies. Turning on the new one before the old one ends is how people end up paying for Premium twice.
Premium paid with a gift card
Spotify no longer sells gift cards, but cards bought earlier can still be redeemed. Spotify says that if you don't have a payment method set up, your account goes back to the free, ad-supported service when the gift card time runs out. If you do have one on file, payments continue normally after the balance is used, so cancel before then if you don't want to keep paying.
What happens after you cancel Spotify Premium?
- Premium stays until your next billing date. After that, the account switches to free. Your billing date is shown at the top of your account page.
- Free trials end right away. Canceling during a zero-priced trial moves you to free immediately, and the trial can't be reactivated.
- Playlists and saved music stay. On the free tier you can still listen with ads, but you lose Premium features such as ad-free listening and downloading music to play offline.
- Family or Duo plans: only the plan manager can cancel. A member who follows the steps just leaves the plan. When the manager cancels, everyone loses Premium starting from the next payment date.
Does Spotify give refunds?
Spotify's refund policy doesn't offer prorated refunds for Premium: you "cancel any time and keep what you paid for." It also says it can't refund Premium payments made through a partner, so those requests go to the partner.
There's no general US rule that forces a refund for a partly used month. A charge after a confirmed cancellation is different: that's a billing error you can dispute with your card issuer, as explained in our guide on how to dispute a subscription charge.
Charged after canceling Spotify? Here's what to check
Spotify tells you to open your account page and scroll to "Payment" under "Your plan." What you see there tells you what happened:
| What your account page shows | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Spotify free | This account isn't being charged | Sign in with another email, phone number, Google or Apple: Premium may be on a different account |
| The date your next payment is due | The cancellation didn't go through | Repeat the steps until you reach the confirmation message |
| The date your account switches to free | Cancellation worked | You likely canceled just after a payment; you won't be charged again |
| A partner company's details | The partner handles billing | Contact the partner through the link shown |
It's also worth checking whether a family member or friend subscribed with your card. Keep a screenshot of the confirmation and Spotify's email: they're your proof if you need to dispute.
Should you switch plans instead of canceling?
If price is the reason, you're not imagining it: Premium Individual cost $9.99 until July 2023 and has gone up three times since, most recently from $11.99 to $12.99/mo in January 2026 (see Spotify's price increase history). Spotify's price-updates page says you get an email about a new price and a one-month grace period to cancel before it takes effect.
Before you cancel, compare the US plans (prices checked in October 2026):
| Plan | Price | Cost per person |
|---|---|---|
| Premium Individual | $12.99/mo | $12.99 |
| Premium Duo | $18.99/mo | $9.50 (2 people) |
| Premium Family | $21.99/mo | $3.67 (6 people) |
| Premium Student | $6.99/mo | $6.99 |
| Spotify free | free, with ads | $0 |
A few things to know:
- Student: saves $6/mo, or $72 a year, versus Individual. Spotify says eligible college students get the discount for up to 4 years, re-verifying every 12 months, and the plan comes with access to Hulu's (With Ads) plan at no extra cost. It can't be paid through a phone or internet provider.
- Duo and Family are for people who live together, and only the plan manager pays.
You switch plans from your account page; if you pay through Google Play, Spotify says you can only change plans in the Spotify app. Full plan details are in our Spotify Premium prices guide and on Spotify in Subfaro, and if you're thinking of leaving, compare Spotify vs Apple Music vs YouTube Music.
How Subfaro helps
Subfaro is a subscription tracker: add Spotify by picking your plan, the price fills in, and you get an alert before each charge, in time to cancel or switch plans. Prices of more than 100 services are checked every week, with automatic alerts when they change.
Each service in Subfaro shows its official cancel link. After you cancel with Spotify, mark the subscription as canceled to keep your tracker accurate; that doesn't cancel anything on Spotify's side. The free plan tracks up to 10 subscriptions with no time limit: create your free account.
FAQ
Can I cancel Spotify Premium in the app?
Spotify's own instructions point to your account page: open Manage your plan and select Cancel subscription. It works in any web browser, on your phone or computer. If you pay through Google Play Billing, cancel in your Google Play subscriptions instead.
Will I lose my playlists if I cancel Spotify Premium?
No. Spotify says you keep your playlists and saved music when your account switches to free, and you can still listen with ads.
If I cancel during the free trial, do I keep Premium until the trial ends?
No. Spotify says that if you cancel during a zero-priced free trial, your account switches to free immediately, and the trial can't be reactivated.
Does Spotify refund the rest of the month if I cancel?
Spotify's refund policy says you keep Premium until the end of your billing period rather than getting money back. Premium paid through a partner, like a phone or internet provider, has to be refunded by that partner.
Why is there no option to change or cancel my Spotify plan?
Spotify says that when your account page shows no option to change plans, your Premium is tied to a partner company, such as a mobile or internet provider. Check Payment on the Manage your plan page for the partner's contact details and cancel with them.
